About Mikayla

I've been on your side of the couch, and I know firsthand that coming to counseling can be extremely scary. It's hard to be vulnerable with a new person, not knowing how they'll react to what you tell them. As a counselor, my role is to meet you right where you're at, take your hand, and walk with you at your own pace out of the darkness.

My Journey into Holistic Mental Health Counseling

My professional journey as a counselor started at a center with a focus on sexual assault and domestic violence. There, I learned to value the connection between our experiences and how we view ourselves and the world around us. My own life experiences provide an even deeper foundation for my approach as a counselor today. I may have not shared your exact experience, however, I have felt deep grief, guilt, shame, anxiety, depression, and have had my own traumas. As your counselor, I empathize with the feelings and thoughts underneath your experiences, and can help you to untangle those things.

Transforming Life's Patterns

I believe that there are patterns in our lives, and we can learn to recognize them and create new ones if we choose. We can set down what isn't working for us, and intentionally choose to do something differently. Correspondingly, this starts with an awareness of why we do the things that we do.

Passion for Holistic Mental Health

I am passionate for holistic, mindfulness mental health counseling for kids, teens, and adults. Specifically, I have a passion for areas including trauma, domestic violence and sexual assault, grief, anxiety, depression, post-partum, codependency and attachment issues, self-esteem, relationship issues, and simply wanting to explore life struggles.

Further, I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) that we can use for trauma, anxiety, phobias, future events; Sandtray therapy, using sand and figures as a more non-verbal modality that can help access the subconscious and facilitate a deeper level of processing; and Gottman methods to help facilitate open, healthy communication in your relationships.

We can integrate your faith and values in a way that makes sense for you. You're in the driver's seat. Additionally, I like to integrate art and music into sessions if desired - we can paint, listen to music that means something to you, and create with clay all while talking.

A Safe Space for Self-Expression

In my office, I strive to create an environment where you feel comfortable expressing yourself freely. I offer a judgment free zone to release all emotions and thoughts. Overall, my aim is to help you discover, explore, and find relief from your mistaken beliefs, core fears, shame, and learned behaviors that no longer have benefit, and to develop courage to face what's in front of you.

Beyond Words: A Look into the Use of Somatics in Therapy

Beyond Words: A Look Into The Use Of Somatics In Therapy By Ashley Burks, MA, LPC-Associate Supervised by Kara Grant, LPC-S, CDWF, SEP When we think of therapy, many of us picture a cozy space where we come to tell our stories with a safe, inviting presence. Darkness Under The Lights: Grieving During The Holidays

The lights are hung and the cocoa is hot, but warmth and joy are not what you’re feeling. A sense of empty, lonely, and numb consume you, instead, while grieving a loss. You have guilt for not feeling how you “should” during the holiday season. Grief does that to us – it doesn’t leave. When […]

Healing Trauma: How EMDR Therapy Is The Real Deal

There are many debates in the health world – nature versus nurture, are diagnostic labels helpful or harmful, medical model versus holistic mental health care, medication versus therapy for primary treatment – but one thing that most people seem to agree on in the entire health realm is the effectiveness of EMDR therapy. I have […]

Inner Child Work: Healing Your Inner Child

Inner Child Work: Healing Your Inner Child Mikayla Williams, MA, LPC, NCC “Store consciousness is a kind of chamber where the films of the past are always being projected. It is there that we keep our memories of trauma and suffering. We know in principle that the past is already gone. But the images of […]

The Therapeutic Bond

The Therapeutic Bond: Building Trust and Healing in Counseling A statement we’ve heard way too many times goes something like, “a therapist is someone you pay to pretend to be your friend.” The relationship that we build with our clients is much different than a friendship in many (and necessary) ways. Research across time reflects […]
